Local Physician Serves as Medical and Doping Delegate for International Swimming Event

On Sunday July 21st, 2019, the 10km Open Water Swim races of the FINA/CNSG Marathon Swim World Series occurred in Lac St-Jean in Roberval, Canada. Many top swimmers from across the world flew directly from the FINA World Championships held concurrently in South Korea to participate in the race. Dr. Michelle Henne, sports medicine physician at Relevé Sports Medicine, was recruited to represent FINA as the Medical and Doping Delegate.

The FINA Medical and Doping Delegate is responsible for liaising with the local Medical Officer to confirm water conditions are acceptable in regards to quality and temperature, overseeing emergency action plans and health care coordination, participating with the local Doping Control officer in random selection of athletes for testing, and presenting the Medical and Doping Control programmes at the FINA Technical Meeting.
